D&I Friday Read No. 451

Today we are talking about WEF’s Global Racial and Ethnic Equity Framework, the art of doing nothing, a project using AI to reimagine childhood pictures of trans people, and how postnatal depression can also impact dads.

Racial Equity
The WEF (Word Economic Forum), together with 55 partners, has created the Global Racial and Ethnic Equity Framework. It is based on 10 Guiding Principles and can help address racial inequity in an organization. Insightful article, with five corporate leaders sharing how to implement the principles.

Mental Health
Postnatal/postpartum depression impacts approximately 10-15% of women in the first year after giving birth. But new research has shown that men can be impacted as well – often without getting the right support. Read more here.

LGBTQ+
After transition, some trans people report that they feel uncomfortable seeing their childhood pictures. “Saved Memories” is a project from various German NGOs and was launched on May 17th, International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), showing how AI can help. Watch the video.  

Well-being
Interesting article about “Niksen”, the trend from the Netherlands that translates to “doing nothing”, and can help people to manage stress and improve well-being.

Culture
According to research, women are 41% more likely to experience a toxic culture than men. Interesting MIT Sloan article about toxic workplace culture and the impact on women (and their retention) – worth reading!

Women’s Health
Great story from India! Access to breast cancer screening programs is very limited in India, but thanks to a new program, blind and visually impaired women are now learning to become medical tactile examiners.

LGBTQ+
March 31st was International Transgender Day of Visibility – and thousands of Catholic nuns united to issue a statement of solidarity with the transgender community. Read more here.

Inclusion
The 21st of March was World Down Syndrome DayCoorDown, the Italian non-profit that promotes and protects the rights of People with Down Syndrome, launched another campaign worth watching: “Ridiculous Excuses not to be Inclusive”.

Diversity
Great HBR article sharing how companies can benefit from A/B testing their D&I initiatives – proudly featuring a case study from Ericsson!

Gender Inequality
Ahead of International Women’s Day 2023, the short film “Daughter” was launched to raise awareness about the impact that climate change has on women around the world. Worth watching!

Women in Leadership
The “Reykjavík Index for Leadership” from Kantar Public was first launched in 2018, and measures society’s perceptions of men’s and women’s suitability to lead. According to new data from 2022, trust in women leaders has significantly declined in the past year. Read more here.

Gender
Insightful video with Professor Pragya Agarwal, talking about the gendering of emotions – and how women are often penalized for them.

Anti-Racism
Powerful video from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) – challenging their own practices to “not show the full picture”, perpetuating racist stereotypes. Please watch!

Inclusion & Tech
Ahead of the International Day of People with Disabilities on December 3rd, 2022, Apple released “The Greatest”, a new campaign about accessibility. Worth watching!

Inclusion
The Publicis Foundation launched “Working with Cancer”, a global movement to erase the stigma of cancer in the workplace. The campaign “Work/Life” illustrates what people go through when trying to hide their diagnosis at work – watch the video.

Bias
Interesting research about kindness bias! According to various studies, women are given kinder feedback than men when discussing work performance. But what does that mean for their development? Read more here.

Today we are talking about people quitting their passion jobs, Goldman Sachs settling a gender discrimination case, measuring progress towards meritocracy, and a TED talk on how we can talk about race.

Diversity
How can you measure the progress of your D&I programs? This HBR article shares seven metrics across the entire employee lifecycle that can be used to measure progress towards a merit-based culture – worth reading!

Gender Discrimination
Investment bank Goldman Sachs agreed to pay $215m to settle a gender discrimination case. The settlement covers about 2800 women, who accused the bank of systematically underpromoting and underpaying female employees. Read more here.

Racial Bias
Very interesting TED Talk from Afrika Afeni Mills, explaining why it is so important that we teach children to talk about race – and how it can be done.

Well-being

Gender Equality
According to a new report from UNICEF, child marriage is declining – but way too slowly. Currently, over 12 million girls are married in childhood every year, and while some regions have made progress, others have even seen an increase.

Mental Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month – and Sesame Street launched a new mental health awareness campaign for children, promoting mindfulness.
