D&I Friday Read No. 501

Inclusive Workplaces
Employees with chronic illnesses, such as long Covid, might require specific accommodations. Interesting long article about the steps employers can take to make the workplace more inclusive, and help attract and retain talent.

Women Empowerment
Financial inclusion of women can have a widespread impact, as this story from rural India shows. Worth reading!

AI Bias
Absolut Vodka, together with Copy Lab, launched an initiative to tackle the lack of diverse representation in fashion content created by artificial intelligence (AI), and encourage other consumer brands to do the same.

Mental Health
Great story about altruistic psychiatric care in Geel, a city in Belgium where families take in boarders with mental health issues.

Girls’ Empowerment
The phrases “walking like a girl,” “throwing a ball like a girl,” and “fighting like a girl” are often used in a very negative context. The famous Always campaign features children and young adults who were asked to act “like a girl”.

Belonging
This beautiful Danish TV station ad “All that we share” shows that putting people into boxes does not work – and that we all have more in common than we think.

Women Empowerment
Nike’s advert “Da Da Ding” is an empowering video featuring Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone, as well as various Indian female athletes – encouraging women to break conventions.

Black Representation
Hair Love” is a very sweet (and Oscar-winning!) short movie from Sony Pictures Animation about an African American dad learning to style his daughter’s hair

Anti-Racism
Powerful video from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) – challenging their own practices to “not show the full picture”, perpetuating racist stereotypes

World Down Syndrome Day
To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day 2018, Wouldn’t Change a Thing produced a beautiful carpool karaoke-style video, showcasing 50 moms and their children with Down syndrome. Watch it here.

Paralympics
This brilliant advert Super. Human. was created by the British TV network Channel 4 for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Gender Equality
Pixar’s “Purlis a short animated movie about a pink ball of yarn that starts working at B.R.O. Capital and struggles with the all-male office culture.

LGBTQ+
As their senior thesis project, two computer animation students created this award-winning short filmIn a Heartbeat” which tells the story of a boy and his crush on another boy.

The Australian broadcaster SBS published this video as part of their The real you matters campaign to promote the importance of inclusion in the workplace
