D&I Friday Read No. 379

Today we are talking about fair chance hiring, Airbnb hiding guests’ names to tackle racial bias, developments in gender equality, and an inspiring woman breaking stereotypes.

Inclusion
Hiring people with criminal records is something many employers shy away from. Interesting article about the “fair chance hiring” initiative and why companies like JPMorgan Chase, Starbucks and Slack decided to make hiring more inclusive.

Racial Bias
Airbnb just announced the launch of a pilot in Oregon, where it will hide the names of guests until the booking is confirmed. Airbnb was sued for racial discrimination last year – and a separate study a few years ago showed that in the US, requests from guests with African American names were less likely to be accepted than people with white-sounding names. I love this story! Oorbee Joy is a 47-year-old mother of two who used to work on Wall Street – and decided to learn skating when she was in her 40ies. She is now a successful TikToker and skateboard teacher, breaking stereotypes.
